Jim Schall is in his third year as a science teacher at Springfield High School, having entered teaching after retiring as a district manager with the former Seaway Food Town supermarket chain. He works with entry-level freshmen to advanced-placement physics students, and is always able to find a student's strengths and build on them.

He has started a Science Olympiad team and an Advanced Placement physics course. Under his direction, the Science Olympiad team placed in the top 40 out of 240 teams two years in a row, and had two students win medals at the state competition.

"Jim is an outstanding asset," said Libby McIlwain, assistant principal of curriculum. "He inspires the students academically and is a good friend to the other teachers."

He is also working on a master of teaching arts degree in physics at Bowling Green State University.
