Whitehouse: Area senior citizens invited to AW musical
2/20/2008The Anthony Wayne Alumni Association and the Anthony Wayne High School Drama Department invite area senior citizens to a free dessert and performance of the musical High School Musical Wednesday, March 12, 2008, in the Roy Williamson Auditorium at Anthony Wayne High School, 5967 Finzel Road, Whitehouse.
The dessert will start at 5 p.m., followed by the musical at 6:15.Dessert and coffee will be provided free of charge by the Anthony Wayne Alumni Association.
High School Musical is an original Disney Channel movie that tells the story of high school basketball star Tony and brainy Gabriella, who meet while on vacation and discover they both have musical talents. Both decide to try out for their high school musical, against the advice of their friends.
High School Musical is the story of how their decision changes their lives and the general atmosphere of their school.
Anthony Wayne is the first high school in Ohio to perform this popular musical, according to director Rita Brandeberry. She said the school is putting its own unique "Anthony Wayne touches" on the production, but that it will feature all of the musical's well known songs such as "Start of Something New," "Stick to the Status Quo," and "We're All in this Together," among others.
Anthony Wayne's production features more than 100 actors and musicians.
Anthony Wayne teacher Dave Johnson is the technical director. Music teacher Zakary Wilkins will conduct the pit orchestra.
The Anthony Wayne Alumni Association is looking for outstanding Anthony Wayne Alumni for induction into the Anthony Wayne Alumni Association Hall of Fame.
This award is designed to recognize AW graduates who, through their participation in academics, activities, liberal arts, music programs, or sports at Anthony Wayne High School, have made significant impacts or contributions to the school, community, or students.
To be eligible for nomination, the candidates must meet one of the following criteria:
•Alumni must have graduated a minimum of 10 years ago.
•Staff members must have served a minimum of 10 years and be retired at least five years.
•Honorary nominees must have made significant voluntary contributions to the betterment of Anthony Wayne Local Schools.
To nominate an individual, please complete a nomination form available online at www.anthonywayneschools.org or by stopping by the Anthony Wayne High School Office from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. when school is in session.
Anyone wanting to contribute to a memorial fund in honor of the late Herb Mericle, the Waterville "polar bear" who was known for his icy dip in the Maumee River every New Year's Day, can send contributions to the Mericle Memorial Fund, First Federal Savings and Loan, P.O. Box 335, Waterville, Ohio 43566.
The money will be used to put a memorial to Mr. Mericle in the village's Memorial Park. The memorial will be either a bench with an inscription and etching of a polar bear or a statue of a polar bear with cubs.

World War II veteran Irwin Welling, a waist gunner with the 8th Air Force who spent 340 days as a German prisoner of war after his bomber was shot down, is scheduled to relate his experiences at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Schaller Memorial Building, 130 West Indiana Ave.
His appearance is sponsored by Perrysburg Post No. 28 of the American Legion. The public is invited.
