2/27/2008Miriam Armstrong, an adjunct faculty member at Owens Community College, has been chosen to receive the Ohio Association of Two-Year Colleges' Adjunct Teacher of the Year award for exemplary contributions and dedication to the teaching profession.
Ms. Armstrong, who joined Owens in 2000, teaches courses in community dental health, focusing on disease prevention and health promotion through organized community efforts. For the last eight years, she has helped to develop and revise curriculum and served as a mentor to students in the dental hygiene program.
Ms. Armstrong and her husband, Earl, a dentist, offer community outreach dental services to individuals at the Toledo Correctional Institution. She is currently pursuing her master's degree in organizational leadership from Lourdes College.

Joe Spicer, 18, of Colton, Ohio, in northern Henry County recently was given the distinction of Eagle Scout at an Eagle Court of Honor.
Mr. Spicer, a scout for eight years and a member of Troop 166 in Liberty Center, is the first Eagle Scout it has produced in 33 years.
A freshman at Bowling Green State University, Mr. Spicer is majoring in construction management. He lives in Colton with his parents, Teresa and Mike.
After he graduates, he said he would like to work in the construction industry, with the aim of eventually having his own company. He said he plans to remain in the Boy Scouts.

Perrysburg school officials have selected Woodland Elementary School secretary Josie Holbert as the recipient of the district's Golden Excellence Award for February.
Mrs. Holbert received a gift certificate to Peppercorns restaurant donated by the Griffioen Agency.
The Golden Excellence Award recognizes school employees who go above and beyond the call of duty.
Each month the district chooses an employee from co-worker nominations who best embodies excellence on the job. Mrs. Holbert was nominated by teachers Nancy Hart and Karen Brown and Woodland guidance counselor Andrea Monheim.
Mrs. Holbert was cited for the many extra hours she puts in on the job and for her cheerful and cooperative demeanor.

Beth Christoff, principal at Perrysburg's Toth Elementary School, has been named a finalist for the Technology Administrator of the Year award.
Ms. Christoff recently attended the Ohio Connects technology conference in Columbus, where she was given this honor.
She was recognized for her ability to get technology into her building using funds not in her budget.
