Perrysburg City Council advanced its plan to build a new street division building last week by authorizing a $163,000 contract for design services.

The contract with Normand Associates Inc. was approved on the recommendation of council's service-safety committee, which met before the council meeting to review the architect's plan.

The $2.5 million project is to be on 10 acres of city-owned property on Roachton Road east of State Rt. 25. The division's current building on East Boundary Street has run out of space.

Public Service Director Jon Eckel said the size of the new building has yet to be decided. "We have 5,000 square feet now and we could easily use three times that," he explained.

Mr. Eckel said he wants to install a shed on the site capable of holding a year's supply of road salt, and that he has been sounding out neighboring communities about contributing to the project and storing their reserves of salt there. Supplies of road salt ran short across the region this winter.

Mr. Eckel said he'd like to break ground late this summer and have the facility completed by late summer of 2009.

In other action, council:

•Approved a $5,425 contract with the Baz Group for evaluation of the telephone system in the municipal building.

•Authorized the administration to apply for a grant from the Wood County Solid Waste District.

•Approved the purchase of a backhoe for almost $74,000.

•Authorized advertising for bids for the replacement of the Maumee River interceptor sanitary sewer and for improvements to the wastewater treatment plant.

•Authorized a $24,000 contract with Davey Tree Service for emerald ash borer treatments.
