Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet's new adoption center is open on a limited basis.

The center at 833 Illinois Ave. in Maumee is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays for cat adoptions only, according to June Remley, the animal rescue group's president.

"We're showing at least 20 cats," she said. "But we still have a lot of work to do on our building, which is not ready to accommodate animals overnight."

The adoption center is at the site of the former All Breeds Kennels. It has 4,500 square feet and a big yard, including a fenced-in kennel area for dogs.

The group has been fitting the facility with new doors and an alarm system, and it wants to upgrade the kennel for dogs. Cats are allowed the free run of certain rooms.

Each year, Save-A-Pet finds homes for hundreds of cats and dogs. It prides itself on a "no-kill" policy, which means euthanasia is not used unless an animal is so sick or injured that a veterinarian says there are no other options.

At any one time the group has about 100 animals waiting for adoption in its volunteer foster homes.

Ms. Remley said the adoption center will be staffed by such volunteers on Saturdays.
