Sports Notes: Babe Zaharias women's tournament headlines Cancer Society fund-raiser

The American Cancer Society will sponsor the Babe Zaharias Golf Classic women's golf tournament, scheduled for Monday at Brandywine Country Club, 6904 Salisbury Rd., in Maumee.

Nine and 18-hole scramble events will be held, with a buffet luncheon, style show, and prize awards following. There will be a raffle for prizes.

Golfers may register for the tournament by calling the American Cancer Society at 1-888-227-6446, ext. 5205.

Nine hole golf with a cart and luncheon will cost $75 per player. The 18-hole fee is $100. Bonus packs of a raffle ticket, three door prize tickets, and a pro shot are available at $30.

For nongolfers, the luncheon, style show, and raffle costs $30.

The 20th Archbold Area Chamber of Commerce Golf Scramble will be held June 23 at the Orchard Hills Country Club in Bryan, Ohio. A shotgun start will be at 12:45 p.m. The cost for a four-person team is $240, which includes two golf carts, dinner, and prizes. Make checks payable to AACC and send to P.O. Box 102, Archbold, OH 43502. The event is a benefit for the Archbold Festival of Lights, which runs from Nov. 28 to the end of the year.

The 10th annual Starboard Side Golf Classic at Eagle's Landing Golf Course, 5530 Bay Shore Rd., in Oregon, will be held Aug. 1.

The cost for the four-person scramble format outing is $300.

Central Catholic's annual Irish Open golf outing will be July 28 at Stone Oak Country Club, 100 Stone Oak Blvd. in Springfield Township. Tee times are 7:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.

There will be 18 holes of golf with driving range privileges and cart, breakfast, lunch, and dinner with open bar, free beverages and snacks on the course, prizes, and an auction featuring golf trips and memorabilia.

The fifth Annual Woodward Polar Bear Golf Outing is being held as a memorial to Gary Mayesky, a longtime teacher at Woodward High School who was 45 when he died early this year. The event will be June 27 at the Bedford Hills Golf Club, 6400 Jackman Rd., Temperance, beginning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.

The cost for the 18-hole/best ball scramble is $70 per person, which will include a golf cart and luncheon.

The contest will offer cash and prizes for first, second, and third-place teams and for other contests. Additional guests for dinner will cost $10 per plate.

Checks should be made payable to Woodward High School and sent to the attention of Beatrice Hardy, varsity boys' golf coach, at the school.

The annual Make-A-Wish Foundation Golf Classic will be Aug. 4 at Fallen Timbers Fairways, 7711 Timbers Blvd. in Waterville, with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.

The cost for a foursome is $300 or $75 for an individual, and includes greens fees, shared cart, range balls, lunch on the course, beverages, steak dinner, photo, and door prizes.

Sylvania Recreation and the Northwest District Football Officials Association are offering a required course for those wishing to become an Ohio high school football official.

Classes will be held 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning July 15, running for 11 sessions at the Sylvania Recreation offices at Tam-O-Shanter, 7060 Sylvania Ave. in Sylvania.

A canoeing basics workshop will be given by Stacie Roby, a certified instructor with the American Canoe Association, on June 28 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Hancock Park District, 1424 E. Main Cross St., in Findlay.

The class will begin with boating safety and canoeing equipment at the Waterfalls Pavilion in Riverside Park, then will head down river while participants practice paddling to turn and maneuver their boat.

Recommended ages for this workshop is 16 years and older; youth ages 12 to 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration and a $10 fee per person are due by tomorrow.

The Toledo Area Girls Rugby Club's car wash fund-raiser is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 28 at the Kroger store in Waterville, 2300 Michigan Ave. The self-supporting club is a member of the Michigan Rugby Association.

A car wash will also be held by the Anthony Wayne crew from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 12 at The Andersons, 530 Illinois Ave., in Maumee. The team is a member of the Toledo Rowing Club.
