Goalie War Challenge in Perrysburg to draw soccer players
7/23/2008A soccer event aimed at challenging the skills of goaltenders will be held tomorrow in Perrysburg.
The Ohio Goalie War Challenge Tournament will be held at the Rivercrest Fields on Fort Meigs Road from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The Goalie War tournament is a battle of shots and saves, which is the most exciting part of the world's most popular sport, according to tournament director Ian Graham.
The Ohio Goalie War Challenge is affiliated with the National Goalie War Association (NGWA).
"We are delighted to welcome the National Goalie War Association and the Goalie War tournament to northwest Ohio for the second time," Graham said.
In the new extreme sport, two players face off on a 24-by-22 yard playing field. The object of the game is to score more goals than the opposition during a five-minute match. Winners move to the next round and play continues until only one goalkeeper remains.
The tournament is open to male and female players ages 8 and up. The winners of each division will qualify to participate in the National Goalie War Championships.
Skill tests and goalkeeper clinics also will be included in the tournament activities, according to Graham. Food and sponsor kiosks also will be available at the family-friendly event.

RODEO: The 60th annual Gibsonburg Saddle Club Rodeo will be held Aug. 1-2.
This association will celebrate its anniversary with a two-day rodeo and a speed/fun horse show. The events will take place at the club's arena, three-quarters of a mile north of Gibsonburg on State Route 300.
The rodeo, which is a sanctioned by the Mid States Rodeo Association (MSRA), will be held Aug. 1 beginning at 7 p.m. Some of the top-ranked cowboys and cowgirls in the nation will compete against award-winning livestock.
Events include bareback riding, steer wrestling, calf roping, saddle bronco riding, team roping, girls' barrel racing, and bull riding.
On Aug. 2, the club will host its speed/fun show, which will include "a rescue race" and a "scoop shovel race." The activities begin at 9 a.m. and the main show starts at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children over the age of 6. Kids 5 and under are admitted free of charge. Proceeds benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

VOLLEYBALL: The Toledo Volleyball Club's 14-1 Team took second place at the USA Volleyball Junior Olympic National Championships on July 5 in Dallas.
The TVC 14-1 girls lost to a team based in Honolulu in the 14 National Division championship match. The Maunalani Third Degree club defeated the Toledo team 25-17, 27-25.
The 14-1 team lost just two matches. It beat a club from Colorado in the quarterfinals and then avenged an earlier loss to a team from California in the semifinals.
In the finals against Maunalani, the TVC lost the first game, but tied the second game at 19 and knotted it again at 24. After exchanging points, Maunalani took the game 27-25.
During the season, the TVC 14-1 team played in 10 tournaments and finished no lower than second in any of the events.
The 10-member team is composed of Katelyn Felix, Madison Strall, Shelly DeHenning, Kelsey Reiner, Jocelyn Uchic, Madison Haupricht, Erin Williams, Taylor Swint, Emma Romstadt, and Cassidy Croci.
The team was coached by St. Ursula Academy coach John Buck.
GOLF: Christopher Garzony, a junior golfer from Toledo, has qualified for a prestigious international tournament.
Garzony will compete in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships Saturday through Monday at the PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Garzony, who will be entering the eighth grade at Gesu School, will compete in the boys 12-13 age division.
The event attracts hundreds of golfers ages 10 to 18 from around the world. This year's tournament includes 625 players representing 40 states, six Canadian provinces, and 30 other nations.
BASEBALL: The Haskins Royal Knights U14 baseball team won a title at the USSSA Ohio State Tournament on June 22 in Columbus.
The Royal Knights, which consists of players from the Anthony Wayne, Bowling Green, Delta, Otsego, and Rossford school districts, won the state championship for the second straight season.
The Knights qualified for the USSSA World Series in Kansas City, Mo.
