Maumee school board mulls levy options

7/30/2008

The Maumee Board of Education has taken the first step towards putting a levy request on the November ballot.

The board instructed Treasurer Paul Brotzki to ask the Lucas County Auditor to calculate how much money would be generated by a variety of possibilities: a 7-mill replacement levy, a 6-mill replacement levy, a 4.9-mill new levy, and a 5.9-mill new levy.

With the dollar figures in hand, the board then is to decide which option to take to the voters.

The Maumee schools are looking at operating deficits this year and next, but have reserves to cover them.

Mr. Brotzki forecasts a $2.7 million operating deficit in fiscal year 2010 without new revenue.

The school district has been hit by rising tax delinquencies and declining real estate valuations.
