10/25/2008Maumee resident Joseph Bojarski not only completed his first marathon Oct. 12, he also finished near the top of his division.
Bojarski competed in the 2008 Chicago Marathon and finished 1,035th in his division. Competing against more than 45,000 runners, Bojarski finished 8,468th overall.
Bojarski, 42, completed the 26.2-mile course in 4 hours, 11 minutes, and 30 seconds. He placed 6,112th among the male competitors.
In 2002, Bojarski was selected to carry the Olympic torch for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. He was part of the 11,500-person, 46-state chain that carried the Olympic torch from Atlanta to Salt Lake City.
HOCKEY: Through 12 games this season, the Toledo Cherokee has outscored its foes 70-27.
As a result, the local Junior A hockey team has compiled a sterling 11-0-1 record and sits atop the Central States Hockey League standings. Five of the team s top eight scorers are from the Toledo area.
Toledo went undefeated last weekend with two wins over Motor City (Detroit) and another victory over Queen City (Cincinnati). Toledo also collected four of four points in a road trip to Grand Rapids Oct. 11-12. The Cherokee outscored the Owls 19-2.
On Oct. 11, Toledo pounded Grand Rapids 10-1. Ten different players scored for the Cherokee, including Brent Bain (Toledo), Andrew Kolb (Toledo), Matt Cook (Sylvania), Adam Pigula (Temperance) and Rusty Hafner (Toledo). The Cherokee also outshot the Owls 53-10 and did not allow a single shot on goalie Aaron Buetenmiller in the third period.
On Oct. 12, Toledo dominated Grand Rapids 9-1. Toledoan Evan Johnston scored one goal as did Bain and Kolb. The Cherokee outshot Grand Rapids 55-18 and Patrick Murray got the win in goal.
Kolb, who is a Central Catholic graduate, leads the team with 13 goals. Kolb also has 11 assists for a team-high 24 points. Bain, who played at Northview, has 12 assists and six goals. Johnston, who is a senior at Southview, is third on the team with 17 points (five goals and 12 assists).
Cook, who also is a Northview graduate, has six goals and eight assists. Carter Bourland (Sylvania), a fellow former Wildcat player, has six goals and six assists.
