Campus notes: All-conference team honors for BGHS grad in track-field

Bowling Green High School graduate Alan Bowsher, a junior at Ohio Northern University, was named to the track-and-field All-Ohio Athletic Conference academic team.

Bowsher also has been one of the more decorated Polar Bears this season. He was named the OAC distance runner of the year at both the indoor and outdoor conference championship meets.

Bowsher also was a three-time conference champion this year. He won the indoor 3,000 run as well as the outdoor 5,000 and 10,000. Bowsher added a second-place finish in the indoor 5,000-meter run.

BASEBALL: Whitmer High School graduate Ryan Domschot, who is a sophomore pitcher at Adrian College, was named a first-team All-American last week.

Domschot is the first Adrian College player to be named to the first team by d3baseball.com.

Domschot was a dominant left hander all season and set a school record with 10 wins. His 83 strikeouts ranked third most in a season at Adrian College

He began the season 8-0 with a 1.63 earned run average. In 11 of 13 starts, Domschot allowed two earned runs or fewer. He struck out eight or more hitters in four starts.

For the season, he threw 75 innings and allowed just 16 extra-base hits.

In his two-year career, Domschot has thrown 107 innings and struck out 121 batters.

He finished the season with a 10-2 record and posted a 2.64 ERA, which was seventh-best in a season for the Bulldogs.

SOFTBALL: Monroe High School graduate Jess Irwin, a sophomore at Madonna University, was named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year for the second straight season.

Irwin led the entire NAIA with 33 wins this year. She became just the fourth pitcher in NAIA history to pass the 400-strikeout mark.

Irwin broke her own single-season strikeout mark in addition to setting the all-time WHAC record this season with 423. She now has 698 career strikeouts, ranking in the top 15 in NAIA history.

Irwin threw four no-hitters this season and now has six in her career. She added a perfect game against Cornerstone on April 11.

Last week, Irwin was named to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics second-team last week.

FOOTBALL: St. John s Jesuit graduate Ben Burkett, a redshirt sophomore offensive lineman at Northwestern University, has been named to the Rimington Trophy watch list for the upcoming season.

Burkett, a 6-foot-4, 285-pound center, is one of 44 players who were nominated for the award that honors the nation s top center.

Burkett started all 13 games for last year s Wildcat team, which finished 9-4 and played in the Valero Alamo Bowl.

He was named a Phil Steele s third-team all-freshman selection as well as an ESPN.com first-team All-Big Ten freshman team honoree. Burkett also was tabbed Northwestern s offensive newcomer of the year recipient.
