Perrysburg Rotary Club adds to Owens scholarship program
4/13/2010The Rotary Club of Perrysburg and its foundation are continuing financial support for higher education in northwest Ohio with a $20,000 donation to provide graduates of Penta Career Center with scholarship opportunities to attend Owens Community College.
The donation will be used to grow a recently established scholarship program to $40,000 of endowed funds.
Last November, Owens and the Rotary Club of Perrysburg announced the establishment of an endowed scholarship program with an initial $20,000 donation from the club's foundation. The club's overall goal is to grow the scholarship program into a $100,000 endowment.
Eligibility requirements for the new scholarship program include that the recipient must be a Penta Career Center high school graduate who has completed at least a two-year program at the school; that the recipient attend Perrysburg, Lake or Rossford high school and achieve a minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average, and the recipient must demonstrate financial need as well as significant participation in community service activities during high school.
Recipients, who will be selected through a screening and interview process, will be assigned a Rotary mentor and must remain in contact during the term of the scholarship.
Scholarships will not have a stated amount, but are intended to provide
a fully paid college education through the attainment of an associate's degree from Owens.
Because scholarships will be awarded from interest earned on the endowment fund, the number of scholarships awarded will vary.
The timing of when the scholarships would be awarded has not yet been decided. However, the Rotary Club and Owens anticipate the first award would be made in the fall semester of 2011, if not sooner, according to Jennifer Fehnrich, a Perrysburg Rotary member and special assistant for government relations at Owens. She noted the Rotary Club anticipates making a third gift installment in the spring of 2011.
