PETERSBURG, Mich. - The Rose Run, a 5-kilometer run and walk to benefit cancer research and the local volunteer fire department, will be July 17.

The run, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. at 10 East Center St., is in memory of Rose Marie Hunt, a city resident who lost her battle with cancer in January, 2009. It is organized by her daughter Jessica Cribbs.

It begins festivities for the city's Community Day Festival, an annual celebration that dates to 1976.

The cost of the run/walk is $25 with registration online in advance at theroserun.com or by mail before July 1.

The cost on the day of the run, when registration begins at 7:30 a.m., is $30.

Like last year, organizers are inviting people around the world to sign up, pay the registration fee, and participate through a virtual run or walk.

All proceeds for the virtual runners and walkers will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Last year's event raised more than $10,000.
