Four candidates for the position of Springfield Schools' treasurer will be interviewed during special board meetings at 5 p.m. Wednesday and 5 p.m. Oct. 25 in the board of education room in the district's administration building.

The board will go into executive session for the interviews, said Treasurer Robert Moellenberg who is leaving the post Dec. 31.

The district' will open its doors to the public on Oct. 27 to provide tours of Springfield High School, Springfield Middle School, and Holland Elementary.

The 9 a.m. to noon tour and program, designed to provide residents and real estate agents with an opportunity to learn about Springfield Schools, is being held by the Holland/Springfield Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the school district, which recently received an Excellent with Distinction designation from the state.

Guest speaker will be Anita Lopez, Lucas County auditor.

Program topics, targeted specifically to the Springfield district, include accounting and taxation; land use planning and zoning; real estate marketing; cultural diversity; township and village demographics, and legislative issues that influence real estate with an emphasis on school funding, upcoming levies, and pending legislative issues.

Voters in the Springfield district will decide Nov. 2 whether to approve a 3.9-mill continuing operating levy.

Real estate agents can receive credit hours; their registration is required by contacting the chamber at 419-865-2110.

A free program focusing on Fort Meigs and the War of 1812 will be presented by Rick Finch, fort director, at 7 Wednesday in Wakeman Hall, 401 Farnsworth Rd.

The event is sponsored by the Waterville Historical Society.

Mr. Finch, a Waterville resident who has a background in interpretive programming, is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Fort Meigs as well as strategic planning, community relations, personnel management, accounting, and development.

Fort Meigs is the largest reconstructed wooden-walled fort in the country and was the scene of two sieges by the British and their allies during the War of 1812.

Something's cooking as organizers plan a tasty fund-raiser to benefit the 2011 Relay for Life of Southern Lucas County, which includes Maumee, Waterville, Whitehouse, and Monclova.

Many types of homemade chili will be available for sampling during an American Cancer Society Chili Cook-Off from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Whitehouse Fire Station, 10550 Waterville St.

A Halloween costume contest will be held for children up to age 10.

A community health screening and a business expo, sponsored by the Whitehouse Chamber of Commerce, will be from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 6 in Hope United Methodist Church, 10610 Waterville St.

Door prizes, refreshments, and giveaways will be offered.

Blood work services will be offered along with additional screenings and education sessions.

The Whitehouse Chamber of Commerce is hosting the events in conjunction with ProMedica Health System and St. Luke's Hospital.
