Owens Community College is collecting old commencement caps and gowns -- of any color -- from graduates as part of a program to help graduating students who cannot afford to purchase their own.

Students can wear the gently used items at their fall commencement after they pay a refundable $5 deposit.

Donations will be accepted through Nov. 30 in Room 165 in the Perrysburg Township campus' Student Health and Activities Center. The Findlay campus will collect donations at the Student Services Center.

"The parties and celebrations that follow the pomp and circumstance quickly subside after a few days and in many instances the graduate's cap and gown are placed in storage or discarded entirely," the college said in a written statement.

Students can pick up the caps and gowns at Room 165 while supplies last. Call 567-661-7583.
