Maumee film on sex abuse in military slated

To raise awareness on sexual abuse within the U.S. military, the YWCA H.O.P.E. Center is bringing to Maumee a documentary that premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival. The Invisible War is to be screened at 2 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Maumee Indoor Theater, 601 Conant St. Admission is $5.

"Today, a female soldier in Iraq or Afghanistan is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. A staggering 20,000 soldiers are estimated to have been assaulted in 2009 alone," according to the Toledo women's shelter.

"And the number of military sexual assaults in the last decade is believed to be in the hundreds of thousands," the shelter said. "Tracing the powerfully emotional stories of several young veterans, the film reveals the systemic cover-up of the crimes they have suffered and follows their struggles to rebuild their lives and careers."
