Maumee City Council passed an ordinance to hire an in-house law director and stop paying outside attorneys to do the work. Council President Brent Buehrer said he thinks the new position will save the city money.
“Our advisers told us if we have more than 1,000 hours of attorneys out of the office, then we should get someone to work for us internally,” Mr. Buehrer said. “We had 1,400 hours” last year, he said.
Some attorneys the city uses “are paid at $160 a hour; that is around $224,000 a year,” he said.
The full-time, in-house law director will have a salary between $65,000 and $100,500. Mr. Buehrer said it could be about six weeks until the position is filled.
