Maumee paving work to include sidewalks, ‘turn islands’

A repaving project that began last week on Conant Street and Reynolds Road will include completing sidewalks between Dussel Drive and the Anthony Wayne Trail and steps to prevent left turns at locations without stoplights, a city official said.

Under its $2.9 million city contract, the Shelly Co. will grind off and repave 4 inches of pavement on Reynolds and Conant north of the Trail to the Ohio Turnpike, Service Director Joe Camp said. New traffic signals and updated signal controllers will be installed, with countdown clocks at crosswalks, he said.

The biggest changes will be the sidewalk construction, installation of a median on Conant between Holland Road and the south Meijer entrance, and placement of “right-in, right-out” islands at Clinton and Sofia streets near downtown Maumee.

The islands will block left turns in and out of those streets — turns that cause congestion at Conant and the Trail, and sometimes accidents, Mr. Camp said.

The work is set to be done by June, Mr. Camp said, but signal work could be delayed if poles, due in May, arrive late.

As much as possible, he said, it will be coordinated with turnpike work to widen the bridge over Reynolds at the city line and with installation of a signal at the Kroger supermarket being built at the former Ed Schmidt auto dealership.
