Local volunteers have raised enough money to pay for an Independence Day fireworks show in Waterville this year and may have enough to stage a community festival before the display, an organizer said Monday.

Charles Larkins said the committee for the Red, White, and Boom show has about $15,000, enough to hire a fireworks contractor for the Fourth of July show. “... If we reach $20,000, it will allow us to have the festival,” he said.

Waterville City Council is expected to consider hiring a fireworks contractor at its May 13 meeting.
