COLUMBUS - Opponents of Ohio's new law giving counties and townships greater say when it comes to city and village annexation of their land have fallen short in their first attempt to repeal it.

A county-by-county examination of the petitions determined that the petitions also failed to meet the additional requirement ensuring that its sentiment reflects that of voters across Ohio.

The state's review claims the petition met this burden in just 14 counties, including Lucas and Wyandot in northwest Ohio.
