Taft picks Toledo city official for environmental council

COLUMBUS - Gov. Bob Taft announced yesterday that he has appointed Dennis M. Garvin, supervisor of the Toledo Department of Parks, Recreation, and Forestry, to the state Environmental Education Council.

The council advises the state Environmental Protection Agency on how to spend the Environmental Education Fund, which uses part of the air and water-pollution fines collected in the state on programs to increase public awareness of environmental issues. Mr. Garvin holds degrees from Hocking Technical College and the University of Toledo.

The governor also reappointed Robert W. Hare of Sandusky, region environmental manager for General Motors Corp., to the council. He holds degrees from General Motors Institute and the University of Toledo.

Both terms will expire Oct. 1, 2005. Members are compensated only for expenses.

In other action, Mr. Taft reappointed:

wOlivia H. Summons of Toledo, director of public affairs for Sunoco Mid-America Marketing and Refining, to the Ohio Educational Telecommunications Network Commission for a term expiring Nov. 8, 2007. The panel champions growth of public broadcasting in the state. Her compensation is limited to expenses.

wDale K. Benington, a teacher and coach for Oregon City Schools, to the Ohio Historic Site Preservation Advisory Board for a term ending Jan. 14, 2007. Board members receive no compensation.

wSarah J. Lewis of Fremont to the Governor s Council on Juvenile Justice for a term ending Nov. 1, 2006. Ms. Lewis is program assistant of the Genesis Program at the Ohio State University Extension. Members are compensated for expenses only.
