Gay-marriage ban vote OK'd in Ohio

COLUMBUS - Ohio voters will get a chance to decide whether a ban on same-sex marriage should be added to the state constitution.

Secretary of State Ken Blackwell has told supporters of Issue 1 that they collected enough valid signatures to put it on the Nov. 2 ballot. He certified that the amendment's backers had collected 342,212 valid signatures, and that signatures from more than half of Ohio's 88 counties met or exceeded 5 percent of the total number of votes cast in the 2002 governor's race. The requirement was to get at least 322,899 valid signatures.
