COLUMBUS Gov. Bob Taft has asked the federal government to declare a disaster and provide aid to six northern Ohio counties hit with severe storms last week.

Heavy rains and high winds caused flooding and widespread damage in Cuyahoga, Erie, Huron, Lucas, Sandusky and Stark counties.

The storms killed two people, spawned tornadoes and knocked out power to thousands in the state.

Taft declared emergencies for the six counties after touring some of the damaged areas and receiving reports that more than 4,000 homes or businesses were affected by the severe weather, with 25 of those buildings destroyed.

Given the severity and magnitude of damage, we need federal assistance to help Ohio families and businesses recover from this disaster, Taft said in a statement.
