DEARBORN, Mich. A free digital photography program for middle school students offered by the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn is being honored by the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities.

The SURA Arts Academy is one of 15 programs nationally scheduled to receive the committee's Coming up Taller award on Friday in Washington.

The award was created in 1998 to recognize outstanding after-school arts and humanities programs. Recipients receive $10,000 each.

The academy's students are taught by instructors from Detroit's College for Creative Studies. Students discuss their photographs in sessions designed to strengthen cultural awareness among Arab, Hispanic and black communities.

Sura is the Arabic word for photograph.
