COLUMBUS, Ohio — The State Highway Patrol says it was a safer Labor Day holiday weekend on Ohio roads, with fewer traffic deaths.

The patrol said Wednesday that Ohio law enforcement agencies report 12 people were killed in crashes between Friday evening and late night on Monday. That's down from 18 fatalities during the comparable period in 2008.

This year's holiday weekend also saw troopers arrest nearly 600 suspected drunken drivers.
