Strickland moves up speech date

BLADE COLUMBUS BUREAU

COLUMBUS - Gov. Ted Strickland has opted to move his State of the State Address up a day to get out of the path of President Obama's State of the Union Address on Wednesday.

Mr. Strickland now plans to address a joint session of the Ohio General Assembly at noon Tuesday. Mr. Obama had announced his speech after Mr. Strickland had made his plans.

Mr. Strickland is locked in a tight race for re-election against Republican John Kasich. He is expected to use his speech to argue that his policies have helped position Ohio for a comeback once a national economic recovery takes hold.

Although it would have come hours before Mr. Obama would have addressed Congress and the nation, the President's speech likely would have overshadowed its Ohio counterpart.
