CHICAGO - Authorities say reports of a suspicious item on a Southwest Airlines flight triggered precautionary searches before the Detroit-bound jetliner could take off from Chicago's Midway Airport Monday.

But Southwest Airlines spokesman Brandi King said the item, which she declined to identify, turned out to be nothing hazardous or threatening.

Ms. King says Southwest Airlines flight 2534 returned to the gate for the searches early yesterday afternoon.
