New registry of exonerations includes 28 Ohio cases about wrongfully convicted inmates

COLUMBUS — Twenty-eight Ohio cases are included in a new national registry that details hundreds of cases of inmates who were exonerated.

The National Registry of Exonerations is a joint effort by the University of Michigan Law School and Northwestern University’s Center on Wrongful Convictions. It covers 873 cases.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that since 1989, more than 2,000 people have been wrongly convicted of serious crimes and later exonerated.

Michigan law professor Samuel Gross says he believes many more people who have been falsely convicted are not exonerated because they die while behind bars or serve out their sentences.

The 28 Ohio cases listed in the registry put the state eighth on the list of states with the most exonerations. Illinois topped the list, followed by New York and Texas.
