COLUMBUS — Veterinarians at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium think they know what’s killed 14 of their exotic birds since April.

The zoo says a bacterial infection was passed from bird to bird, killing one-third of its lorikeets.

Zoo veterinarian Dr. Michael Barrie tells The Columbus Dispatch they think the infection has stopped and that the last death came more than a week ago.

The aviary that houses the birds and where visitors can walk through and feed nectar to the lorikeets has reopened.

The zoo’s veterinarian says they may never know what actually caused the infection.
