CLEVELAND — The Cleveland City Council is considering a resolution of support for Police Chief Michael McGrath, who has been criticized in the wake of a police chase and shootout that left two suspects dead.
The Plain Dealer newspaper reports that the resolution was introduced Monday night and referred to a committee. It lends support to McGrath and Mayor Frank Jackson.
The police union has called for McGrath's resignation after a state investigation found that “systemic failure” led to the chaotic Nov. 29 chase and shootout and resulted in two likely unarmed suspects shot multiple times by officers. McGrath has denied there were problems with the system.
A grand jury will determine later if any of the officers involved should face criminal charges.
