BEDFORD TOWNSHIP — Monroe County authorities rescued a 54-year-old man who fell through thin ice while trying to save his dog from a pond.

Edward Jefferson and Wynne the dog are OK. Sheriff's Deputy Tim George used an aluminum extension ladder to get the pair out of the water Saturday in Bedford Township.

The dog fell through ice while retrieving a ball thrown by a 6-year-old family friend. Jefferson had minor injuries from the dog during the rescue. The family called 911 after trying to rescue the pair with a rope.

It all happened near Jefferson's home — on Dogwood Lane.
