DETROIT— A fire destroyed a Detroit building containing medical offices early today after gunfire was reported at the facility, people who work at the building said.

The Detroit Fire Department said it responded to a 911 call about the blaze at Park Medical Centers on the city's west side and that firefighters had largely extinguished the flames by late-morning. Smoke continued to rise from the building as police interviewed witnesses.

There was no immediate word of injuries.

Podiatrist Stuart Kirschenbaum said he was at his office in the building early today when he learned about the shooting from a security guard who yelled that a man who used to work at the building had grabbed a woman and was firing at others.

Clinical psychologist Kim Logan Nolin also has an office at the single-story building. She said she was on her way to work about 9 a.m. when a worker already at the building called to her to say it was on fire and that there had been a shooting.

WDIV-TV reported that a shooting may have taken place at the building before the fire.

The Detroit police public information office said it had no information to release early today.
