AKRON, Ohio — A northeast Ohio man charged after the shooting death of his 4-year-old son has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports 49-year-old Terrance Allen didn’t comment but wept in court Tuesday as a judge finalized the deal.

Police have said the boy somehow got a gun in Allen’s car and accidentally shot himself on Jan. 23. Allen, who had been driving, flagged down a sheriff’s deputy, who found the boy with a gunshot wound to his head. The child later died at a hospital.

Allen pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, a weapons charge and a misdemeanor for violating a protection order. Two charges were dismissed under his plea deal.

The Akron man faces up to 11 years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled July 16.
