Ancient artifacts stolen from Miami University
7/2/2013OXFORD, Ohio — Officials at Miami University in southwestern Ohio say someone broke into a classroom and stole $10,000 worth of ancient artifacts.
Miami University anthropology professor Jeb Card tells The Cincinnati Enquirer that the value of the pieces — some 4,000 years old — is more than monetary.
The items included a Neolithic flint dagger from Denmark and several Aztec artifacts. They were taken from a locked glass cabinet last week.
A local philanthropist had collected the items from the 1920s to 1940s and donated them to the university in 1959. Card said students used the artifacts to learn the methods and techniques of archaeology. He said they can’t be replaced.
University police are investigating.
