COLUMBUS — Charges including vehicular homicide have been filed against the driver of a hospital shuttle bus that hit and killed a researcher and injured another research institute official in central Ohio.

Police said the men were hit from behind at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus on May 29. They were walking along a road where the sidewalk was blocked due to construction.

Driver Karl Beem is accused of negligence and not remaining in reasonable control of the shuttle. The 62-year-old Columbus man is scheduled for arraignment Friday on charges including vehicular manslaughter and failure to control a vehicle.

Court records showed no attorney for Beem. There was no public phone listing for his home.

A hospital spokeswoman tells The Columbus Dispatch Beem is on leave while the case is pending.
