Cleveland councilman convicted of drunken driving

CLEVELAND  — A Cleveland city councilman accused of drunken driving for the third time has been convicted of driving under the influence.

Councilman Zachary Reed could face up to six months in jail when he is sentenced Sept. 5.

After the jury’s decision Tuesday, the 52-year-old Reed told WJW-TV that he’ll seek treatment for an alcohol addiction but will not resign from the council.

Reed’s attorney said he was disappointed in the verdict. The city prosecutor didn’t comment on the decision.

Police said Reed was arrested in March after running a red light and making an improper turn. Police said he failed a sobriety test and refused a breath test.

Reed served a 10-day sentence in 2008 on his second drunken-driving conviction. He has been on the council for 13 years.
