COLUMBUS — Ohio’s attorney general has suggested tips to help keep shoppers safe from scams and thefts during the holiday season.

A release from Attorney General Mike DeWine advises shoppers to avoid distractions such as cellphones while walking to their cars and to park in well-lit areas.

Ohioans also should be aware of strangers approaching them for any reason. DeWine says con artists may try to distract shoppers in order to take their money or belongings.

The attorney general also urges online safety precautions.

Online shoppers should check a website’s reputation before making a purchase by looking for complaints filed with the attorney general and the Better Business Bureau. A basic Internet search also can be done using the website’s name and the word “scam” to look for potential red flags.
