Ohio fire fatalities last year fell to lowest level in 27 years; attributed to several factors
1/4/2014COLUMBUS — Ohio saw the fewest fire-related deaths last year in more than a quarter century.
The state Fire Marshal’s Office reports there were 103 fire-related fatalities in 2013. The number dropped for the third straight year and was the fewest in 27 years.
The previous low of 106 fire deaths occurred in 2012. There were 128 in 2011, and 155 in 2010.
State Fire Marshal Larry Flowers attributes the reduction to fire safety education programs, better training for Ohio’s firefighters and other factors.
Flowers notes that many of Ohio’s fire-related fatalities occurred in homes with no working smoke alarms.
