DETROIT — Two people have been arrested after the death of a 4-year-old Detroit boy who was accidentally shot by his 4-year-old cousin.

Police are calling the death of Jamel Witcher Jr. a tragic accident. He was shot in the chest Thursday after his cousin picked up the gun near a bed while they were watching television.

Detroit police Sgt. Mike Woody tells The Detroit News that a woman in the home was arrested on a warrant unrelated to the case. He says a man was arrested for being an ex-convict who possessed a gun.

Woody says the boy’s death doesn’t seem criminal, “just accidental.” Jamel’s mother, Adrian Tubbs, tells the Detroit Free Press that her son and his cousin were very close, almost like twins.
