BRECKSVILLE, Ohio — The head of a park on the shoreline of the San Francisco Bay has been chosen as the next superintendent of the only national park in Ohio.

The National Park Service says Craig Kenkel will become superintendent this spring at Cuyahoga Valley National Park, located about halfway between Cleveland and Akron. The previous leader of the park became a regional director last summer.

Kenkel has been superintendent at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park in California since 2010.

He says he first visited the Ohio park in 1992, and it’s been on his top-ten parks list since then.

The Harlan, Iowa, native started his full-time career with the park service in 1985 as a historical architect. He also has worked in the Midwest region office.
