COLUMBUS — A gun rights group has sued Ohio State University over its weapons ban, arguing it conflicts with rights provided by state law to permitting law-abiding gun owners.

The Students for Concealed Carry Foundation says the ban restricts constitutionally protected rights, including the right to self-defense by Ohio State students living in university housing.

The lawsuit filed Monday in Franklin County Court says the ban restricts the rights of both lawful gun owners who want to carry weapons openly and holders of concealed-carry permits.

The lawsuit asks a judge to overturn the ban and order the university to destroy any disciplinary records used to punish students found to have possessed weapons.

University spokesman Gary Lewis says Ohio State is reviewing the lawsuit and will prepare a response.
