Tepid week dents portfolios

The top four portfolios in The Blade’s Annual School Stock Contest decreased last week because of a less-than-stellar week on Wall Street.

Although the top four’s holdings lost an average of 1.6 percent, a team from Fostoria Junior/Senior High School skyrocketed from 62nd place to fifth place.

Umizomi climbed its way up because of better-than-expected financial news from Hewlett-Packard Co., which released its earnings Friday.

Hewlett-Packard’s stock rose almost 11 percent, helping Umizomi’s portfolio increase 3.78 percent to $41,861. The team’s other holdings include Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc., NIKE Inc., and Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc.

“This will provide a really nice lesson in how much you can grow or decrease in such a short amount of time. They’re going to be really surprised,” said Chad Krukemyer, the teacher of the eighth-grade students who make up Umizomi in his social studies class.

Ronald Belle, investment advisers executive and senior vice president at Fifth Third Bank, a sponsor, said Umizomi weathered the tepid week because of its diverse portfolio. The week was one of the most volatile this year, he added.

“Things were a little bit more rough than they usually are,” Mr. Belle said. “... This year we’ve seen nothing but the up side.”

On top are JD2T from Springfield High School, which rose from second place to first, switching places with Cashbag from Anthony Wayne Junior High. CashFlo, from All Saints Catholic School in Rossford, moved up from fourth to third place.

The 113 teams were given a hypothetical $40,000 budget, and the funds were allocated evenly among four stocks. The stocks initially were worth at least $5 a share. The 12-week contest runs through April 26. Participants can change their stocks on March 8.

The team with the best-performing portfolio will win $250 for the students and $250 for the school. Second place will receive $250 for the school, and third place gets $100 for the school. The contest is sponsored by The Blade’s Newspaper in Education program, the Taylor Automotive Family, Fifth Third, and the University of Toledo, which calculates the results.

Another team that rose is ATMS from Byrnedale Elementary. ATMS is in fourth place, and its portfolio is valued at $41,875. The seventh-grade students in Beth Huffman’s math class are eager to win; a group of her students took first place in the contest last year.

ATMS’ holdings include Avon Products Inc., Google Inc., Priceline.com Inc., and Microsoft Corp. Strong performances by Avon and Google have helped the team move up each week since the contest began on Feb. 4.

“We love it, but who knows?” Ms. Huffman said. “We were 81st in the first week. They went from 81st to seventh in the second week. ... Anything can happen.”
