  • The first week’s results in The Blade School Stock Contest show that having one hot stock can play a big role in a portfolio.

Eight of the top ten teams chose either J.C. Penney Co. Inc. (JCP) or Tesla Motors Inc. (TSLA) as one of their stocks. They were rewarded handsomely when the stock of both companies soared.

“Choosing any one stock at a point can be a risky venture,” said Ronald Belle, senior vice president and investment advisers division executive at Fifth Third Bank in Toledo. “Company news, cyclical timing, geopolitical developments, etc., can positively or negatively impact a stock’s short-term performance.”

A team called ADTR from Springfield High School leads the way after the first week. It was followed by mariner, from the Toledo Maritime Academy, and magicb from Bowling Green High School.

ADTR is one of several teams from Jennifer Hoel’s financial algebra class that is participating in the contest.

Ms. Hoel said her students each spent a couple weeks doing individual research on stocks they were interested in. They then joined together in teams of five students to compare their findings and choose the team’s stocks before the Feb. 14 deadline.

Ms. Hoel’s teams have had success. Last year she had teams place first, third, fourth, 12th, and 18th. In 2012, one of her teams finished seventh.

ADTR’s portfolio grew from $40,000 to $43,004 in the first week, thanks mostly to J.C. Penney, which climbed 29 percent last week.

J.C. Penney’s stock rose last week after the department retailer on Wednesday reported a profit for the fourth quarter of 2013. The profit was a relatively modest $35 million, but that compared to a massive loss of $552 million in the same quarter of 2012.

The company also issued a positive outlook for the current quarter.

The news gave investors some confidence that J.C. Penney is making strides in recovering from a botched transformation plan by its former CEO.

Five teams that chose Tesla stock are among the contest’s top ten teams. Tesla gained almost 17 percent last week.

Tesla shares surged after a Wall Street analyst from Morgan Stanley wrote in a note to investors that Tesla could not only nearly double its share of the global car market by 2028, but it also could create another lucrative business by building battery packs for energy storage.

Each of the 158 high school and junior high teams from the Toledo area was given a mythical $40,000 to split evenly among four stocks that were selling for at least $5 a share.

Midway through the 12-week contest, the teams will have one chance to exchange one or more of their stocks for another stock.

At the end of the 12-week contest, the team whose portfolio has grown the most will be the winner.

The winning team will get $250 for the students and $250 for the school. The second-place team will receive $250 for the school, and third place gets $100 for the school. Prizes may be cash or gift certificates.

The contest is sponsored by The Blade’s Newspaper in Education program, the Taylor Automotive Family, Fifth Third Bank, and the University of Toledo, which calculates the results.

“It was a very good first week,” Fifth Third’s Mr. Belle said. “Ninety percent of the teams had their portfolios increase in value. It’s going to be fun to see how each team’s portfolio performs over the next 11 weeks.”
