Long hair, tattered jeans, and smoldering eyes were not enough to keep American Idol contestant Constantine Maroulis from being rocked and rolled out of the hugely popular vocal competition series on Fox.

Last night's live results proved too much for Idol judge Paula Abdul who broke down in tears at the announcement by host Ryan Seacrest that the 29-year-old New York City native was packing his bags. The Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison fan was a favorite among female fans. Now only five contestants remain.

On Tuesday's show the theme was songs from the 21st century. Maroulis chose Nickelback's "How You Remind Me," which did not meet the approval of any of the show's judges, even Abdul, his admitted fan. The outspoken judge Simon Cowell said "welcome to the dark side or the light side" at Maroulis' obvious Rock 'n' Roll song and performance.

Some 35 million cast their votes, and contestant Ukraine-born Anthony Fedorov, 19, of Trevose, Pa., came in next to last as the bottom vote-getter. Also in the bottom three this week was Vonzell Solomon, 21, of Ft. Myers, Fla.

American Idol finals are scheduled to air May 25.
