WTOL to begin broadcasting in HD
4/22/2011Things are about to get much clearer for WTOL-TV, Channel 11.
Beginning Monday, the local CBS affiliate will begin broadcasting its newscasts in high definition.
"We've been aiming for this day for about a year," said WTOL news director Andi Roman.
"[WTOL owner] Raycom has a schedule for its group of stations and we're excited it's our turn. With the transition to digital we know many of our viewers now have HD sets and we're glad we can provide a much better picture."
High-definition signals offer significantly better resolution than even digital broadcasts. In order to receive a high-definition signal, a viewer must have a high-definition TV and a HD-capable cable box or satellite receiver or an antenna.
The ability to broadcast local programming in high definition also requires a significant investment in equipment. Roman declined to discuss the cost involved in the station's conversion to the high-definition broadcast, other than to say, "it's a great investment and we're happy to provide an enhanced viewing experience. We've had HD weather equipment in place for months. On Monday you'll have an enriched viewing experience."
WTOL joins WTVG-TV, Channel 13, as the only local affiliates with high-definition newscasts. WTVG made the conversion in July.
