Ch. 13 gets 6 Emmys; Ch. 11, 3
6/24/2011WTVG-TV, Channel 13, recently picked up six Emmys, and WTOL-TV, Channel 11, won three from the Lower Great Lakes chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
WTVG won for best evening newscast for 11 p.m., best weekend newscast, best continuing coverage (for reporter/weekend anchor Bill Hormann's report "Police Battle Over Concessions"), best sportscast (Joe Nugent), and best news-weathercast ("Blizzard" Bill Spencer for his coverage of the June 5, 2010, tornados in northwest Ohio and southern Michigan). Nugent also won in the category photographer, nonnews for his "Capturing Key Sports Moments." WTVG received 15 nominations -- a record for the station.
WTOL won best newscast (morning/daytime) for 5 a.m., the category societal concerns (for anchor-reporter Chrys Peterson's "Behind the Badge" report), and best sports program (for Big Board Friday with Dan Cummins).
WTOL received eight nominations. WUPW-TV received three nominations.
The Lower Great Lakes chapter includes affiliates in Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Lima, and Youngstown, as well as stations in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Ind., and Erie, Pa. The Emmy winners were announced Saturday in Cleveland.
