WASHINGTON The House failed today to override President Bush s veto of a bill to lift his restrictions on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. That means the veto stands, killing the measure.

The vote was 235-193 to override, 50 votes short of the two-thirds majority required to send the question to the Senate.

Bush said the bill crossed a moral line between science and ethics that can only do damage to both. Supporters of the bill said it would have allowed research only on embryos conceived during a fertility process that would otherwise have been discarded.
