UT baseball players rank among top hitters in U.S.

University of Toledo freshman Mitch Maier and sophomore Phil Pilewski ranked fifth and 10th nationally in the NCAA's final batting statistics of the past season.

Maier was the All-Mid-American Conference first-team catcher and the league's freshman of the year; he hit a league-leading and school-record .444.

Pilewski also surpassed the previous UT record of .426 by hitting .433, third in the MAC. He set single-season UT records with 74 hits and 120 total bases and drove in 53 runs, the second-most in school history.
