Toledo assistant Saliers resigns

11/27/2001

University of Toledo assistant men's basketball coach Tim Saliers announced his resignation yesterday, citing personal reasons.

The resignation is effective Sunday, the day after UT's home game against St. Bonaventure, and ends a lengthy on-again, off-again relationship between Saliers, 34, and UT coach Stan Joplin.

“I wish the program the best the rest of this season and in the future,” Saliers said in a statement. “I've enjoyed my time here, but there are some things in my life that I need to take care of at this time.”

“We wish Tim the best in all of his future endeavors,” Joplin said. “We'll certainly miss all the time and hard work he has put into our program.”

Before last season Joplin and Saliers had had a falling-out over an incident during a summer basketball camp. Saliers was reassigned to video coordinator, but rejoined the coaching staff in January. A 1992 graduate of Aquinas College, Saliers joined the Rockets' staff before the 1997-98 season and helped UT compile a 75-47 (.615) record during his tenure.

Joplin said he likely will wait until the 2001-02 season is over to hire a replacement for Saliers, whose duties included scouting, film exchange and running the summer camps.

Joplin still has Mike Jackson and Bob Simon as assistant coaches.
