UT's Shook places first at NCAA cross country regional

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Toledo's Brianna Shook (Seneca East) was the individual winner as the Rocket women finished eighth out of 31 teams at the NCAA Division I Great Lakes Region Championships.

Shook ran the 6,000-meter course in 20:47.1 to win by 10 seconds.

Also finishing in the top 10 was Toledo's Sara Vergote, who placed ninth in 21:37.0.

The Rockets will await word tomorrow on whether they qualified for the Nov. 25 NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. Notre Dame and Michigan earned automatic bids by finishing first and second, respectively.

The UT men placed 18 out of 31 teams, its highest finish ever, as Mike Vilt finished 87th in a time of 32:52.0 for the 10K course.
