The United States Track Coaches Association named Briana Shook of the University of Toledo its outdoor women s track athlete of the year for the Great Lakes Region.

Shook, whose specialty is the 3,000-meter steeplechase, a competition in which she holds the U.S. women s record, won that event at the MAC Championships and at the Penn Relays. She also qualified to the NCAA Mideast Regional in the 1,500 and 3,000 but has chosen not to compete in those events.

Shook and teammate Ebba Stenbeck will compete in the steeple at the regional tomorrow in Baton Rouge, La.

A communications major, Shook was also named yesterday to the Academic All-MAC track team. She has a 3.52 grade-point average.

Also on the Academic All-MAC track team from Bowling Green were seniors Amber Culp (3.22, social work), Kerri McClung (3.85, early childhood studies) and Alicia Taylor (3.23, health science).

The three Falcons, along with freshmen Andrean Bunk and Liz Honegger will be competing at the NCAA regional.

Culp will run in the steeple after placing fourth in the MAC. Taylor will compete in the 100-meter hurdles.

McClung earned her way with a school-record shot put of 50-02. Bunko will compete in the javelin. Honegger won the discus at the MAC Championships and has a personal best of 152-05 this season.

t Two Bowling Green athletes have been honored by District IV (Ohio, Michigan, Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee) as Academic All-Americans. Swimmer Amy Smith, a junior, carries a 4.0 grade point average in social work, while senior hockey player D Arcy McConvey posted a 3.91 GPA in financial economics.

t Two University of Toledo senior football players, offensive tackle Nick Kaczur and tight end Andrew Clark, were named to the second and third teams, respectively, of Athlon magazine s preseason All-American squad. They are the only two MAC players and the only two players from any Ohio school on a 78-man preseason list.
